PENN STATE WELCOMES AUBURN FOR PRIMETIME MATCHUP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 OPENING KICK: No. 10\/12 Penn State hosts No. 22\/20 Auburn on Saturday in Beaver Stadium for a non-conference battle to continue the home schedule of the 2021 season, presented by PSECU. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ETC .
\u2022 GAMEDAY IN HAPPY VALLEY: ESPN\u2019s College GameDay will make its 22nd appearance at the site of a Penn State game. Penn State is the only school to host GameDay in each of the last five seasons. GameDay will appear at a Penn State game for the sixth consecutive season. Saturday\u2019s broadcast marks the 10th time ESPN\u2019s College GameDay has originated from Penn State.
\u2022 PENN STATE WHITE OUT: Penn State will host its 13th annual full-stadium Penn State Whiteout. A tradition stretching back to a student section White Out in 2004, Penn State White Outs have created an unrivaled atmosphere inside Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions are 6-6 in Penn State White Out games.
\u2022 SERIES HISTORY: The Nittany Lions will take on Auburn for the third time in program history. The two previous matchups came in bowl games. In 1995, Penn State earned a 43-14 win over Auburn in the Outback Bowl. Auburn\u2019s quarterback in that game, Patrick Nix, is the father of Auburn\u2019s current quarterback, Bo Nix. Wally Richardson threw for four touchdowns, while Bobby Engram had four catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. In the last matchup, Penn State fell 13-9 against the Tigers in the 2002 Capital One Bowl. Robbie Gould hit three field goals.
\u2022 NITTANY LIONS AGAINST THE SEC: Penn State holds a 23-23 record against current members of the SEC. Of the 46 matchups, 20 have come in bowl games, including Penn State\u2019s most recent game against an SEC opponent, the 2019 Citrus Bowl against Kentucky. Penn State is 10-16 in regular season contests against the SEC.
\u2022 THE OPPOSITION: Auburn earned a 62-0 win over Alabama State last Saturday to improve 2-0 on the season. The Tigers ran for 364 yards and three scores. Auburn had two 100-yard rushers as Jarquez Hunter gained 147 yards on eight carries and Tank Bigsby rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries. Hunter added a rushing touchdown. Bo Nix threw for 108 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers defense held Alabama State to 176 yards and forced two takeaways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HEAD COACH BRYAN HARSIN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Bryan Harsin is in his first season as head coach at Auburn.
\u2022 Harsin has directed his programs to bowl appearances in all eight seasons as a head coach.
\u2022 Harsin coached the previous seven seasons at his alma mater, Boise State, leading the Broncos to a 71-19 record.
\u2022 He led the Broncos to five 10-win seasons, seven bowl appearances and six Mountain West Conference West Division Championships.
\u2022 Boise State won three Mountain West titles under Harsin and won the 2014 Fiesta Bowl.
\u2022 Before serving as Boise State\u2019s head coach, Harsin was head coach at Arkansas State in 2013. The Red Wolves claimed a share of the Sun Belt title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCOUTING THE TIGERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Auburn began its 2021 campaign with a 60-10 win over Akron and followed with a 62-0 victory against Alabama State.
\u2022 The Tigers went 6-5 in 2020, earning a bid to the Outback Bowl against Northwestern.
\u2022 Auburn ranks second in the country in scoring offense (61.0), third in rushing offense (340.0) and eighth in third down conversion percentage (58.8).
\u2022 Junior QB Bo Nix has completed 74.4 percent of his passes for 383 yards and five touchdowns.
\u2022 WR Shedrick Jackson leads the Tigers with seven catches for 90 yards, while WR Demetris Robertson has six catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
\u2022 Freshman RB Jarquez Hunter is averaging 128.5 rushing yards per game with 257 yards on 17 carries (15.1 average) and two touchdowns.
\u2022 Sophomore RB Tank Bigsby has rushed for 120.5 yards per game. He has 241 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries (10.0 average). Bigsby was a preseason first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus.
\u2022 On defense, Auburn leads the country in scoring defense (5.0) and rushing defense (21.5) while sitting third in total defense (182.0).
\u2022 Senior LB Zakoby McClain leads the Tigers with 17 tackles.
\u2022 CB Roger McCreary has 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception.
\u2022 K Anders Carson was a preseason second-team AllAmerican selection by the Associated Press<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 ESPN\u2019s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will be live from Happy Valley on Saturday.
\u2022 This is the 22nd time College GameDay has been at the site of a Penn State game.
\u2022 The popular pregame college football program will air live from 9 a.m.-noon (ET) Saturday.
\u2022 Penn State is the only school to host College GameDay in each of the last five years.
\u2022 College GameDay will be appearing at a Penn State game for the sixth consecutive season, joining the 2020 Ohio State game, 2019 Michigan and Ohio State games, 2018 Ohio State game, 2017 Michigan and Ohio State contests and the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game.
\u2022 The 12-time Emmy Award-winning show is hosted by Rece Davis, with analysts Lee Corso \u2013 who returns to the main desk after contributing virtually last season, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and David Pollack, Chris \u2018The Bear\u2019 Fallica, and reporters Jen Lada and Gene Wojciechowski.
\u2022 Saturday\u2019s broadcast marks the 10th time College GameDay has originated from Penn State and the first time it has done so in five consecutive years. It was also in Happy Valley in 1997 (Michigan), 1999 (Arizona), 2005 (Ohio State), 2007 (Ohio State), 2009 (Iowa), 2017 (Michigan), 2018 (Ohio State) and 2019 (Michigan) and 2020 (Ohio State).
\u2022 Penn State is 4-5 with GameDay on campus, defeating Arizona (1999), Ohio State (2005) and Michigan (2017, 19).
\u2022 Saturday\u2019s GameDay appearance be the third for a non-conference game, joining Arizona (1999) and at Alabama (2010).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Five Nittany Lions made their first career collegiate start against Wisconsin: S Ji\u2019Ayir Brown, LB Curtis Jacobs, OL Juice Scruggs, DE Nick Tarburton and OL Anthony Whigan.
\u2022 DE Arnold Ebiketie and DT Derrick Tangelo made their first start at Penn State against Wisconsin.
\u2022 LB Jamari Buddin, LB Dominic DeLuca, OL Olumuyiwa Fashanu, LB Kobe King, DT Fatorma Mulbah, S Jaylen Reed, QB Mason Stahl, DT Jordan van den Berg and WR Harrison Wallace III made their collegiate debuts against Ball State.
\u2022 Freshman CB Kaleb Brown, freshman CB Kalen King and redshirt freshman OL Nick Dawkins made their collegiate debuts against Wisconsin.
\u2022 Seven true freshmen have made their PSU debuts this season: Brown, Buddin, DeLuca, Kalen King, Kobe King, Reed and Wallace III.
\u2022 Transfers CB Johnny Dixon, Ebiketie, WR Winston Eubanks, CB A.J. Lytton, Tangelo and Wilson made their Penn State debuts against the Badgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2021 CAPTAINS NAMED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Penn State football head coach James Franklin announced redshirt seniors QB Sean Clifford, S Jonathan Sutherland and K\/P Jordan Stout, seniors S Jaquan Brisker and DT PJ Mustipher and redshirt junior OL Rasheed Walker have been named team captains for the 2021 season.
\u2022 Clifford and Sutherland are captains for the third-straight season, the only three-time captains in program history<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GAME RECAP-Ball State<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time in 22 months, fans filled the seats of Beaver Stadium as the Penn State football team opened its home schedule with a 44-13 victory over Ball State on Saturday. It was Penn State\u2019s 300th win in Beaver Stadium .
The crowd of 105,323 saw a strong offensive performance from the No. 11\/13 Nittany Lions, as Penn State complied 493 yards of total offense on the day.
Quarterback Sean Clifford completed 21 of 29 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. He also added 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The passing score came on a 25-yard connection with Jahan Dotson in the second quarter. Dotson has now reached the end zone in four consecutive games dating back to last season.
Penn State was also strong on the ground, as the Nittany Lion rushing attack compiled 240 yards with three different players tallying 60-plus yards. Noah Cain was the team\u2019s leading rusher with 69 yards and his second touchdown of the season.
After a three-takeaway day in the team\u2019s season-opener against Wisconsin, the ball-hawking Penn State defense added two more interceptions on the day, highlighted by a 16-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Jesse Luketa.
The Nittany Lions now turn their attention to No. 25\/RV Auburn as the two teams are set to meet next Saturday night at Beaver Stadium for the annual Penn State White Out game.

HOW IT HAPPENED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nittany Lions methodically marched down the field on their opening possession, driving 13 plays on 78 yards resulting in a Noah Cain 5-yard touchdown run.
Penn State would double its lead on its ensuing drive, highlighted by 20-plus yard completions by Clifford to Parker Washington and Keyvone Lee to set the Nittany Lions up inside the five-yard line. Clifford completed the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Penn State a 14-0 lead.
Ball State would get on the board in the opening minute of the second quarter on a Jake Chanove 24-yard field goal.
Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week Jordan Stout would follow with a field goal of his own, connecting from 45-yards to extend the Penn State lead to 17-3.
The Nittany Lions would score once more in the first half, when Sean Clifford found Jahan Dotson for a 25-yard catch and run to make it 24-3. Ball State would end the half with a 23-yard field goal by Chanove as time expired.
The Penn State defense got the scoring started in the second half with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter when Jesse Luketa intercepted a Drew Plitt pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. It was Penn State\u2019s first pick-six since John Reid intercepted a pass for a touchdown in 2019 against Buffalo.
Stout would add three more to the scoreboard in the closing minutes of the third on a 26-yard field goal to give Penn State a 34-6 lead.
The Nittany Lions got another takeaway on Ball State\u2019s next drive on Daequan Hardy\u2019s first-career interception.
Penn State would add another field goal with 9:59 to go in the fourth when Stout connected on a 22-yarder. Ball State scored its first points of the second half on a 6-yard touchdown run by Carson Steele with 6:58 to go.
Penn State would add one final score with 2:10 remaining in the game when Ta\u2019Quan Roberson tossed his first career touchdown pass, a 23-yarder to Theo Johnson to cap off the 44-13 victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TALIAFERRO RETURNS AS HONORARY CAPTAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Former Nittany Lion Adam Taliaferro will return to Beaver Stadium to serve as honorary captain this Saturday.
\u2022 As a true freshman cornerback, Taliaferro suffered a careerending spinal cord injury making a tackle against Ohio State in a game on Sept. 23, 2000. Paralyzed by the injury when he fractured his 5th cervical vertebrae and bruised his spinal cord, the Voorhees, N.J. native was given a five percent chance by doctors of ever walking again. He made a full recovery.
\u2022 A little more than 11 months after his injury, Taliaferro completed one of the major goals he had set on September 1, 2001 as he walked, then skipped and jogged onto the Beaver Stadium turf, leading the Nittany Lions onto the field against Miami (Fla.).
\u2022 Taliaferro began taking a full academic course load again at Penn State in the 2001 fall semester while continuing his rehabilitation. In May 2005, he walked across the stage at the Bryce Jordan Center and was awarded his degree in labor and industrial relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STREAKING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Penn State has won 13 consecutive games against teams that are not members of a Power Five conference.
\u2022 Penn State has won 11 consecutive games over non-conference opponents during the regular season, dating back to a win over Temple in 2016.
