Joe Paterno Nominated for Medal of Freedom

Penn State is currently engaged in an effort to ask President Obama to bestow upon Joe Paterno the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  The Members of the PA Congressional Delegation in Washington, DC are asking their colleagues to sign a letter to the President to this effect (http://thompson.house.gov/Paterno%20Letter%20Final%20Text.pdf).
We need your help in getting signatures from Members of Congress from other states beyond PA.  Pasted below is a letter that may be filled in and emailed to any member of the US Senate or House of Representatives.  This letter, along with resources to find contact information for one’s Members of Congress, is also available here: http://alumni.psu.edu/grassroots/grassroots#medal.  Email and phone calls are preferred, as traditional mail will not reach the offices by the signing deadline.
Please contact your Federal representatives by sharing this information on your Facebook pages and Twitter feeds.  The deadline for Members of Congress to sign on is October 4, 2011, so we have only a few days before this letter is sent off to the White House.  We’d like to get as many signatures as possible and we think we can do that with you help.
Sample Letter to Member of Congress:
Dear ______________,
I am a proud Penn State alum, and I want you to help Penn State’s football coach, Joe Paterno, get the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
You may already know that every member of Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation has signed a letter urging President Obama to present Coach Paterno with the medal in recognition of his many contributions to collegiate athletics, higher education, and American society.
During his career, Coach Paterno and the Nittany Lions have had:
– more than 400 career wins, five undefeated teams, two national championships, and three Big Ten conference championships.
– sixteen Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes, 47 Academic All-Americans, and 18 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners.
–  Over the years, Coach Paterno has shown tremendous character and commitment to “success with honor” – setting and reaching challenging goals for the team without sacrificing the ideals that are central to higher education. He has also given generous support for Penn State libraries and academic programs, the Special Olympics, and the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, a group seeking a cure for disorders that affect the nerves outside the brain and spine.
 In the past, other collegiate coaches, such as Bear Bryant and John Wooden, have received the award.
The letter is being circulated by Senator Bob Casey, Senator Pat Toomey and Congressman Glenn Thompson. Please sign on as soon as you can. I can’t think of a more deserving person for the award.
